Wayne L. Oien

Wayne L. Oien, age 71, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, October 22, 2019 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Faith United Lutheran Church in rural Volin, South Dakota with Vicar Corey Scott officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery with military honors performed by the Rudolph-Christensen Post No. 237 and US Navy Honor Guard. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, October 25 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation continues one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Pallbearers are Cody Oien, Damien Tripp, Dylan Huggins, Taylor Larson, Brett Olson, Hunter Schroeder, Les Oien and James Hazen. Wayne was born May 26, 1948 in Beresford, South Dakota to Orvin and Marie (Paulsen) Oien. At age 4, the family moved to Volin, South Dakota. Wayne attended Pleasant Valley Country School and then graduated from Volin High School in 1967. He joined the United States Navy in July 1967 and he served in Guam and Philippines during the Vietnam War. Wayne was honorably discharged in July 1971 and then attended Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, South Dakota where he studied to be an Aviation Mechanic. Wayne worked at the Sioux Falls Airport for several years. He married Jean Moline in 1975 and to this union, four sons were born. In 1978, he started farming in the Volin area. He farmed until 2006 and then moved to Yankton where he worked at Hy-Vee until 2012. Wayne loved fishing, camping and reading. He always loved going for a drive and enjoyed traveling. Wayne was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, LA Dodgers and Minnesota Twins. He was a devoted grandpa who rarely missed one of his grandchildren’s activities. He deeply loved being around his family and will be greatly missed. Wayne is survived by four sons: Matthew (Julie) Oien of Yankton, Timothy (Melissa) Oien of Volin, Joshua (Kearstin) Oien of Beresford and Jonathan (Susan) Oien of Long Beach, MS; 13 grandchildren: Asheigh, Hunter, Ashley (Dylan), Cody, Grace, Katrina, Brendan, Shelby, Joseph, Emily, Katelynn, Nicholas and Lillian; two sisters, Elaine Oien of Sioux City, IA and Lisa Tripp (fiancé, Robert Proefrock) of Gayville, SD; and several nieces and nephews. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Matthew Oien.
