Sharon “Weedie” Smith, age 85, of Yankton, South Dakota passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at her home.
Memorial services are 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Bierwagen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior the service at the funeral home.
Sharon was born December 29, 1938 in Yankton, South Dakota to Royal and Dorothy (Whatling) Boom. She graduated from the eighth grade in Yankton and then started working right away in the OB Department at Sacred Heart Hospital under the direction of Sister Blanche. Sharon married Jack Smith and to this union, four daughters were born: Kim, Brenda, Jacki and Traci. Sharon worked at the hospital for about 20 years and became lifelong friends with Sister Blanche. Then she took a job as a custodian with the Yankton School District and worked at the middle school until she retired at the age of 63.
Sharon enjoyed her retirement years with a number of activities. She loved flowers and working in her garden. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidery and making all sorts of crafts. Sharon was an excellent cook and loved cooking and baking for her family. She loved music and especially enjoyed listening to Bob Seger. In her younger years, Sharon enjoyed riding motorcycles and hot rod cars. She loved all animals, especially her dog, Bella, but also enjoyed feeding and watching the birds, and even had several pet tarantulas.
Sharon is survived by her three daughters: Brenda (Keith) Haberman of Fordyce, NE, Jacki (Keith) Tramp of Yankton and Traci (Gary) Wurtz of Yankton; seven grandchildren: Christopher (Sarah) Frick, Adam (Kendra) Frick, Colton (Heather) Wurtz, Riley (Ally) Haberman, Jack (Kenzie) Tramp, Max Tramp and Erica Wurtz; nine great grandchildren: Kaleb, Isis, Sophi, Ayden, Boston, Cooper, Jake, August and Wesley; four step grandchildren; one brother, Gary Boom of Yankton; four nieces and nephews: Mike, Tricia, Jason and Corey Block; and her beloved dog, Bella.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Kim Smith; brother, Jerry Huntley; sister, Carol Boom; nephew, Kelly Huntley; and lifetime partner, John Thorton.
