A memorial service will be 10:30 AM on Friday, March 15, 2019, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota, with Reverend Jeff Otterman officiating. Burial will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.
Mildred “Millie” Knapp was born August 24, 1947, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Henry and Mildred (Watson) Johnson. She grew up in Canistota, South Dakota, and graduated from Canistota High School in 1965. She married Harold Schmidt on December 18, 1965, and they moved to Marion, South Dakota. Harold died in 1977 and Millie was left to raise their five children. They moved to Yankton in 1981 and Millie began working at Riverside Bar and Grill. She married Paul Sangster, Jr. in 1984 and began working as a cook at the Human Services Center. She attended trucking school and worked for Marquardt Transportation in Yankton where she met, and later married, Gordon Knapp on November 6, 1997. Together they owned and operated their own trucking business for many years. Millie later worked for EPI and finally at Walmart until her retirement in 2018.
Millie was a hardworking, dedicated and generous woman who overcame many obstacles in her life. She sacrificed everything for her children and cared for everyone that entered her life; taking the time to talk to everyone she met. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, canning, feeding birds, reading, puzzles, but mostly enjoyed having her family together for family meals and card games. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and loved spoiling them.
Survivors include her five children: Rosalie Heidinger of Andover, Minnesota; Quincy Schmidt of Springport, Michigan; Travis (Carla Degen) Schmidt of Yankton; Trent (Laura) Schmidt of Aberdeen, South Dakota and Ben (Tera) Schmidt of Yankton; 11 grandchildren; three step children; brother, Harry (Alice) Johnson of Parkston, South Dakota, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Harold in 1977 and Gordon on December 20, 2017; two sisters: Donna Schmidt and Adeline Montgomery and brother, Lewis Johnson.
