Mildred was born on September 21, 1936 in Dante, South Dakota to Lawrence and Tillie (Novotny) Herman. Later the family moved to her mother’s family farm in Tabor, SD. She graduated from Tabor High School in 1954 and then went on to Southern State Teacher’s College in Springfield, SD for one year. After college, Mildred taught at Elm Grove Country School for two years. On Tuesday, August 27, 1957, she married Clarence Walloch at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Tabor and then they farmed together by Lesterville. Mildred cooked many, many daily feasts for family, hired men and any feed or machinery salesman that happened to be at the farm at dinner time. Her meals were legendary. When she wasn’t busy cooking, her and Clarence traveled to many cattle sales. After he passed away in 1996, Mildred moved to Tabor. She loved to make quilts and embroider towels for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also volunteered at the Tyndall Good Samaritan Society for a few years. Mildred was a devoted Catholic who watched daily Mass on TV when she could no longer attend Mass and she instilled her faith in her family. Mildred loved cardinals and the Minnesota Twins. She was the family “worrier” and loved her family immensely.
Mildred is survived by three children: Bob (Julie) Walloch of Lesterville, David (Peg) Walloch of Lesterville and Kathy (Kenny) Sayler of Tabor; seven grandchildren: Vicky (Steve) Fryda of Lesterville, Jessi (Jared) Stark of Lesterville, Carrissa (Aaron) Pietz of Lesterville, Joe (Kristyn) Walloch of Scotland, SD, Sandy Schenkel of Tyndall, Jeff (Janelle) Sayler of Tabor and Kelsey (Trevor) Bertsch of Rapid City, SD; 19 great grandchildren: Grace and Kade Fryda, Jerica, Jenny, Jillian and Jayden Stark, Noah and Carson Pietz, Lucas, Riley, Alex and Natalie Walloch, Emma, Nolan and Miles Schenkel, and Marla, Oakley, Lydia and Otto Sayler; three siblings: Larry (Kay) Herman of Duluth, MN, Tillie (Mel) Loecker of Crofton, NE and Margie Schoon of Slayton, MN; brothers-in-law, Eugene Soukup of Wagner, SD and Roger Kostel of Yankton; sister-in-law, Gladys Kubal of Yankton; and many nieces and nephews.
