Mary Ann Hans, 91, of Yankton, SD (formerly of Wynot, NE) passed peacefully to her Heavenly Father, February 16, 2019 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD. Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, Feb. 22nd at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church in Wynot, NE with Rev. Eric Olsen and Rev. Jeremy Hans officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wynot. Visitation at the church will be on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Friday at the church one hour prior to services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, NE. Pallbearers will be Mary Ann’s grandsons: Michael Tullis, Jason Hans, Justin Hans, Chad Wieseler, Ryan Wieseler, David Wieseler, Russ Zeisler, Eric Modde, Luke Modde, Nick Modde, Steve Simmons, David Hans, and Jacob Hans. Honorary Pallbearers will be the granddaughters: Erin Tullis, Becky Hans, Julie Lautenschlager, Crystal Epstein, Heather Blom, Ashlyn Hans, Kayla Hans, and 25 great grandchildren. Mary Ann was born Dec. 27, 1927, in Bow Valley, NE to Anton “Tony” and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Schulte. She grew up on a farm in the Bow Valley area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Hartington in 1945. After graduating from Omaha School of Business, Mary Ann worked as a secretary in Omaha, NE and Seattle, WA. She then worked as a legal secretary in Yankton, SD until her marriage to Marcus "Jim" Hans on August 23rd, 1949 in Bow Valley, NE. They resided on a farm south of Wynot, where they raised 11 children. Mary Ann was an active member of the Wynot Sacred Heart Altar Society, Christian Mothers, and American Legion Auxiliary Post 31. She was an amazing mother and homemaker who dedicated her life to family and friends. She spent much of her time sewing, cooking, baking, gardening, and helping with the farm chores. Once her children were grown, she worked as a cook at Wynot Public School until her retirement. She was known for her great sense of humor, and loved playing the harmonica for her grandchildren. Mary Ann is survived by her 11 children and their spouses: Colleen (Jim) Tullis of Aurora, CO; Jim (Lori) Hans of Wynot, NE; Susan Brewer of Broomfield, CO; Karen (Dale) Wieseler of Yankton, SD; Kathy (Don) Zeisler of Omaha, NE; Sally (Jeff) Modde of Columbus, NE; Dale (Missy) Hans of South Sioux City, NE; Barbara Hans of Arvada, CO; Rob (Lynn) Hans of Norfolk, NE; Dan (Arlene) Hans of Lincoln, NE; Patrick Hans of Lincoln, NE; 20 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; sister, June (Linus) Lange of Bow Valley, NE; brothers Charles (Jenny) Schulte of Emerson, NE, and Marty Schulte of Yankton, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marcus "Jim" Hans on April 16, 2014 at the age of 90, brothers Hubert “Toby” Schulte, Marvin Schulte, Harold Schulte, Leo Schulte, and Roger Schulte; two sisters, Lucille Keller and Mildred Becker; son-in-law Rick Brewer; sisters-in-law, Marcie Schulte, Rainaldes Schulte, Phyllis Schulte, Karla Schulte, brothers-in-law, Dwight Keller, Jerome Becker; an infant son and infant daughter. The family extends a special thank you to the Avera Sister James caregivers who provided such wonderful care and support for our beloved Mother.
