Margaret Engen, age 90, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at Wakonda Heritage Manor in Wakonda, South Dakota.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Faith United Lutheran Church in rural Volin, South Dakota with Reverend Brent Ashby officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery in rural Volin, South Dakota. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren: Zachary Engen, Jayden Engen, Ethan Engen, Carson Engen, Matthew Buckman, Sarah Buckman, and Meghan Buckman.
Margaret Engen was born December 28, 1933, in Yankton, South Dakota, to Randolph and Alice (Petran) Jacobsen. She grew up in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School in 1952. She then attended Yankton College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and taught for a few years in Sioux City, Iowa. She married James Engen on December 17, 1965, in Yankton and moved to the farm in rural Volin. Margaret took great pride in helping on the farm and raising her family. After retiring from farming, Margaret and Jim moved to Yankton in 1997.
She was a lifelong and very active member of Faith United Lutheran Church. She loved being on the farm and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a simple, practical, caring woman who will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her two children: Chuck (Ann) Engen of Volin, South Dakota and Beth (Kent) Buckman of Gayville, South Dakota; seven grandchildren: Zachary (Jaycie Biel), Jayden, Ethan, Carson, Matthew, Sarah (Brook Van Osdel), and Meghan; two great grandchildren: Maverick and Miles; two brothers: Tom (Jean) Jacobsen of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Steve (Chris) Jacobsen of Yankton; brothers-in-law: Terry Thunker and Larry Good; sister-in-law, Pam Jacobsen and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Engen on May 23, 2005; three grandchildren: Michael, Austin and Natalie Engen; and six siblings: Bill (Kay) Jacobsen, Marge (Jim) Berke, Jack Jacobsen, Janice (John) Powell, Sue Good and Becky Thunker.
