Maggie Young

Marjorie “Maggie” Young, age 96, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Thursday, October 31, 2019, at Avera Majestic Bluffs Hospice House in Yankton. A memorial service will be 11:00 AM on November 18, 2019, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Bierwagen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers are: Chad Young, Russ Young, Jonathon Raap, Derek Zelenka, Rachel Ruston, Adam Young, Matt Young, and Alex Janek. Marjorie “Maggie” Young was born November 29, 1922 in Winner, South Dakota. Her father named her Marjorie but soon after her mother insisted that she would be known as Maggie. Maggie was the third of six children born to Clarence and Wilma (Sawyer) Lefler. She spent her childhood in Winner, moving to Yankton, South Dakota when she was in the sixth grade. Maggie met the love of her life, Max Young at Yankton High School, where they both played drums in the band. They were married in 1943 and over the years welcomed three children: Gary, Nancy and Tom. Maggie worked as a telephone operator for many years in Yankton. They spent their summer vacations in their RV visiting many states and eventually retired to what they called “paradise” in Florida. They were proud to have spent 69 years together. After 25 years of enjoying the beach and the sun, they returned to South Dakota in 2008 to be near their daughter. Maggie was a very strong and independent lady. She managed to take care of herself with the support of her daughter and son-in-law until the very end. She was also very accomplished at knitting and sewing and made many quilts with her daughter. She was often spotted with her bright pink walker with a jeweled pink cup holder on board, which she told everyone it was for her glass of wine but it actually held her iPhone. Maggie enjoyed keeping up with her Facebook friends on her computer and was good at texting on her phone. She faithfully would text her daughter throughout the day just to let her know “everything was OK”. You could always find her watching the NFL or NBA and she kept up on all the players and would correct you if you got it wrong. She was a very spunky lady who had recently been nicknamed “the little firecracker” as she kept everyone laughing while doing her physical therapy. Survivors include her three children: Gary (Alice) Young of Rochester Hills, Michigan; Nancy (Pat) Zelenka of Yankton; and Tom (Margo) Young of Kansas City, Kansas; seven grandsons; one granddaughter; 14 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren with another one arriving in February. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Max in 2012; grandson, Rob Young; siblings: June Baggs, Ken, Harold, and Jim Lefler; and infant sister, Wilma.
