Lawrence Richard Kline Sr., age 83, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Sunday, January 7, 2018, at Ava’s House by Sanford in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A memorial service will be 2:30 PM on Friday, January 12, 2018, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home on Friday.
Lawrence Richard Kline was born August 4, 1934, in Scotland, South Dakota to Harry and Clara (Saquin) Kline. He grew up on the farm in Scotland, South Dakota until his family moved to Seattle, Washington in 1942. Larry’s father died when he was 10 years old and shortly after, his family moved to Yankton, South Dakota. Larry enlisted into the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska working on cameras for spy planes. He married LuAnn Becker in January of 1960 in California and together had three children: Steve, Julie and Larry Jr. They lived in Lynwood, California where Larry worked for UPS before working for the L.A County Sheriff Department. Larry was an L.A. County Sheriff for several years until retiring in 1982. He met Freda Munkvold in 1983 and moved to the Crofton, Nebraska lake area. Larry and Freda purchase an RV and spent several years traveling between South Dakota, Montana, California and Arizona serving as camp hosts for many campsites. In 2004, they moved to Lesterville, South Dakota and Larry worked at Walmart as a greeter. Freda died June 13, 2014. Recently, Larry met Mary Hamberger and moved toYankton to start a new chapter in their lives.
Larry enjoyed spending time in Laughlin, Nevada, traveling, hunting and fishing. Larry will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his wonderful smile.
Survivors include his three children: Steve (Deborah) Kline of Oak Park, California; Julie Levario of Santa Clarita, California; and Larry (Teresa) Kline Jr. of Lake Elizabeth, California; 6 grandchildren; one great granddaughter; two step-children: Rich (Danette) Munkvold and Cindy Munkvold both of Alta Loma, California; brother, Bernard (Geraine) Kline of Yankton; sister, Jeanette Donley of Omaha, Nebraska; and fiancée, Mary Hamberger of Yankton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Freda; son-in-law, Jaime Levario; brothers, Melvin and Donald and sister, Doris.
