Larry Promes, age 79 of Wynot, Nebraska died on Friday, September 6, 2024 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD from a brain tumor.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton, Nebraska with the Rev. Marcus Knecht officiating. Military rites will follow the mass outside of St. Rose of Lima Church by the Crofton American Legion Post #128 and the American Legion Riders. Burial will be at Sts. Philip and James Cemetery at a later date. Visitation with his body present will be on Tuesday from 5-7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton, Nebraska. Visitation will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton. 

Pallbearers are: Bryan Promes, Cole Promes, Jacob Westergaard, Brent Mueller, Mike Mueller, and Earl Johnson.

Larry Eugene was born on October 6, 1944 to Frank Anthony and Erma Laura (Noecker) Promes in Yankton, SD. He was baptized at Sts. Philip and James Church in St. James, Nebraska on October 16, 1944 with Fr. Knippen officiating the baptism. Paul Noecker and Mary (Reuter) Promes were his godparents. He received first communion and confirmation at St. James and was also an altar boy. Larry attended Sts. Philip and James Catholic School and Holy Trinity High School in Hartington.

 In the mid-60’s, Larry joined the 134th Infantry Regiment National Guard located in Wayne receiving basic training at Fort Jackson, SC. In 1968, his unit was called to patrol Omaha during the riots there. After six years, he was honorably discharged. He married Shirley Backman on July 1, 1966 at Sacred Heart Church in Wynot with Fr. DeBacker officiating. To this union was born a son, Neil Patrick. Larry and Shirley later divorced. Larry worked various jobs throughout the years – hauling milk for Neu Cheese, Cedar County Road Department, Iowa Beef at Dakota City, and at the Crofton Elevator. Larry also drove a truck hauling hay and crushed cars, scrap iron, and logs - to and from the saw mill in Ponca, NE.

 Larry liked a good game of cards and enjoyed his friends. He loved hunting, fishing and was a Husker fan. He relished his nicknames: L.P., Sir Lawrence, and Bingo.

 Larry is survived by his son Neil and wife Sharon Promes of Yankton, SD; four grandchildren Jacob Westergaard, Alivia Westergaard, Isabel Westergaard, and Madison Promes; two brothers Tom (LeeAnne) Promes of Seward, Mike Promes of Virginia, NE; a sister Mary Jean “Jeannie” (Bob) Donner of Crofton; plus many nieces, nephews, friends, cousins, and dearest friend Mary Zuhlke of Crofton.

 He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Erma Promes; a brother Charles “Carly” (Sharon) Promes, and his granddaughter, Corrine Promes.
