Larry J. Gleich, age 77, of Yankton, South Dakota, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 21, 2018.
All services (honoring Larry’s wishes) will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Larry was born August 6, 1940 in Yankton, SD to the late Robert and Gladys Gleich. Larry graduated Yankton High School, class of 1959 and married Betty Hansen at the Bethlehem Church on June 6, 1959. He was employed at Red Owl Grocery Store before moving to California for a short time. After returning to Yankton, he was employed at Stuppenagles Egg Processing Plant before managing Erickson Gas Station at the corner of 3rd and Broadway. He moved to Austin, MN in 1969 with an advancement within the company. When returning to Yankton, Larry went to work for Old Homme Bread Company as a route driver and also owned and operated several area businesses. During Larry and Betty’s marriage, they had three children Randy, Mark and Susan.
On September 26, 1981, Larry and Phylliss A. Forinash Hinkel married at the Congregational Church in Hartington NE. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1982. Larry worked for Highland Potato Chip, moved to Rapid City in 1985 and worked for Little Debbie snack cake, drove handicap bus for the school system and drove Greyline bus tours within the Black Hills. They moved to Longmont, CO in 1986 and he worked for Powder River Bus Tours and then NCT as a semi-truck driver. Larry went to work for Crete Carriers as a semi-truck driver. While employed with Crete, Larry and Phylliss returned to Yankton. Larry continued driving with Crete until retiring from driving. At that time, he began operating several area businesses, Lakeport Emporium (Larry known as “Lakeport Larry”), 4th St Tuxedos and then 4th St Antiques & Collectables. Larry’s marriage with Phylliss also gave him an extended family of two daughters, Chris and Alice.
Larry is survived by his wife, Phylliss Gleich (Forinash Hinkel); his children’s mother, Betty Collen (Hansen Gleich); his son, Randy Gleich; his son and daughter in law, Mark & Karen Gleich; his daughter and son in law, Susan (Gleich Newton) and Joel Brewer; daughter and partner, Chris DeBlaue (Hinkel) & Jake Lewis; daughter and son in law, Alice (Hinkel) & Ted Miller; his grandchildren, David Gleich; Robert Gleich; Elizabeth Gleich; Joseph Newton; Christopher Newton; Jennie Joe Brewer; Brittney Hinkel; Brandy Hinkel and Jessie Hinkel; his great grandchildren, Johnny Hinkel and Jamison Hinkel.
