John L. “Jack” Gregg II was born November 25, 1940, in Yankton, South Dakota, to John L. and Aileen (Mettet) Gregg. He grew up in Yankton and graduated from Yankton High School in 1958. He then attended the University of South Dakota for three years until transferring to Southern State College where he graduated with a Bachelors in Business in 1963. He married Judy Collinge on June 8, 1963 and together they lived in Yankton. Jack started working for his dad at Gregg Motor Company after college and took over the business in 1966. He operated Gregg Motor Company until 1997, when he sold the dealership to John Hagemann and it became Yankton Motor Company. After his retirement he continued to work for John through the transition.
Jack was a very active member of the Yankton community. He was a charter member and past president of the Yankton Sertoma Club, as well as a 50-year member of the Yankton Elks Lodge. He also served as president of Hillcrest Country Club and was a member of the Yankton Jaycees, the South Dakota Auto Dealers Association and the National Auto Dealers Association.
Jack was a hardworking, quiet and honest businessman. He never said an unkind word about anyone, never used a bad word, and always treated people fairly. He never wanted to fail and the two most important things he wanted to succeed at were being a loyal husband and a good father. Family was the most important thing in Jack’s life and he measured his success by the wellbeing of his family. Although family was the most important thing, golf was a close second. Jack loved golf, whether he was playing with his friends, taking Tuesday golf trips with the cronies, playing in father/son tournaments with his son Jack or just watching it on TV. He also enjoyed taking trips with his wife Judy to the Auto Dealers Conventions and their occasional weekend getaways. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Judy Gregg of Yankton; two children: Jill Gregg of Yankton and John L. “Jack” (Deanna) Gregg III of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; four grandchildren: A.J. Holland, Quincy T. Brown, John Gregg IV, and Nicholas Gregg; one sister, Sharon (Jim) Haar of Tripp, South Dakota; and one sister-in-law, Kaylene (Rex) Fiedler of Topeka, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Aileen Gregg.
