John was born November 14, 1948 in Yankton, South Dakota to Edward and Alvina (Jensen) Pokorny. He grew up in Yankton where he attended Grove School and then graduated from Yankton High School. When John was in the fifth grade, he had the measles with a very high prolonged fever. This led to many other complications throughout his life including having seizures which made it difficult for him to work. But John did help his father in his construction company, with his mother at Bails Market, and at the Yankton Press & Dakotan for a short time. John enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, playing pinochle and watching television. He had a great sense of humor and had a way to make people laugh. John was a little ornery and maybe a little stubborn, but he did appreciate the help and care he received from his cousins.
John is survived by several cousins including Roxanne Snoozy, Adeline Brown and Harold Braunesreither.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
