John "Jack" Slowey

John “Jack” Slowey, age 84, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Sunday, November 18, 2018 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, November 24, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, South Dakota with Reverend DCruz Nicholas officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Columba Cemetery near Mayfield, South Dakota with military honors provided by the Gayville Rudolph-Christensen American Legion Post No. 237. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, November 23, 2018 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 6:45 PM and a vigil service at 7:00 PM. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren. John “Jack” Slowey was born November 5, 1934 in Irene, South Dakota to Clarence and Helen (Buckley) Slowey. He grew up on the farm near Irene, South Dakota and graduated from Irene High School in 1953. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1956 and was stationed in Germany until 1958. He then joined the Army National Guard and continued serving in the National Guard until 1986. He married Jane Devine on November 11, 1963 and moved to Mission Hill, South Dakota where Jack began his career as a local livestock trucker and later started Slowey Trucking. He then became a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office until retiring in 1997. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, the Gayville American Legion and the Rural Letter Carries Association. His two greatest loves were his love for his country and his love for his family. Survivors include his wife, Jane Slowey of Yankton; two sons: Patrick (Cherilyn) Slowey of Midland, Michigan and Michael (Sara) Slowey of Yankton; four grandchildren: Gabriella, Johnathan, Samuel and Brandon; sister, Cleo (Fred) Bruckmier of Austin, Minnesota; two brothers: Tom Slowey of Yankton and Jerry (Dianne) Slowey of Kansas City, Missouri; two brothers-in-law: Tom Devine of Rapid City, South Dakota and Laddie Devine of Ankeny, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Jeanne (Jeff) Veire of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Sally (Gary) Gramm of Brookings, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim Slowey; sister, Clarice Slowey; and two brothers-in-law: Rod and Dan Devine.
