Jim W.F. Varilek, age 76, of Scotland, South Dakota, died on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in Scotland.
Funeral services are 2:00 PM, on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota with Reverend Scott Traynor officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 and the SD Army National Guard Funeral Honors. Visitation is one hour prior to the funeral at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home.
Jim was born September 27, 1941 in Tyndall, South Dakota to Joseph and Lillian (Plavec) Varilek. He grew up in Tyndall and worked on the family farm. He graduated from Tyndall High School in 1959 and then enlisted in the United States Army. Jim served in Africa during the Vietnam Era. In February 1964, he married Wilma Riggs. They lived in Texas for a year and then moved to Yankton in 1965 after his discharge from the service. Jim worked for Cimpl Packing Company and then was a milkman for Meadow Gold. In the early 1980s, Jim moved to Trinity, Texas and worked numerous jobs with the Texas Correctional Facilities for over 20 years until an injury forced him to retire. In 2008, Jim moved back to Yankton to be closer to his family. Then as his health was failing, he moved to Brandon, South Dakota where his daughter lives and was a resident of Helping Hands Assisted Living. He spent the last several months at the Good Samaritan Society in Scotland. Jim loved fishing, the outdoors, gardening and playing guitar. He also loved cooking, especially grilling and smoking all sorts of meat. He had a great sense of humor and was a very generous and giving man.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Anna (Jon) Nadenicek of Brandon, SD; two grandchildren, Jason Nadenicek and fiancé, Casey Scholten of West Des Moines, IA and Sara Nadenicek and fiancé, Scott Sommers of Sioux Falls, SD; six brothers and sisters: Marcella (Steve) Wold of Burnsville, MN, Margaret (Jim) Kniffen of Tyndall, SD, Georgine (Hank) Suing of Yankton, MaryJo (Edmund) Bauder of Tyndall, Rosemary (LeRoy) Bender of Scotland, and Joe (Teri) Varilek of Scotland; daughter-in-law, Kim Rempfer Varilek and her children, Drew and Emily of Yankton; and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Frank Varilek; and adopted grandson, Vincent Varilek.
