Hubert was born on April 12, 1929 and raised on a farm near Bow Valley, Nebraska to Herman and Anna (Promes) Uhing. Hubert married Leann Burbach on May 7, 1951 at St. Helena Catholic Church and celebrated 67 years of married life. They made their home on a farm three miles west of Hartington until retirement. Hubert and Leann were blessed with seven children: Robert, Dorothy, Ronald, Lawrence, Harold, Richard and Russell. Hubert enjoyed fishing and playing baseball in his youth. As a child, Hubert learned how to swim, trap for fur and fish on the Bow Creek, which ran through his family farm near Bow Valley. Years ago, the creek had deep waterholes that provided fishing spots and swimming holes for farm boys. Fishing continued to be a hobby for Hubert as he ventured to the James and Missouri Rivers with family and friends. In baseball Hubert was a highly regarded pitcher. During summer baseball and for Holy Trinity High School he recorded many wins with a controlled fastball and a sharp curveball. He was invited to try-out for a semi-professional league but decided to farm and raise a family. After graduating from Holy Trinity, Hubert worked briefly in Sioux City, Iowa, then started farming three miles west of Hartington. He vastly improved the farmstead by building barns, fences, a milking parlor and clearing land of rocks and trees for more productive acres. He updated the old farmhouse to raise a large active family. Hubert was passionate about raising crops in straight rows free of weeds before modern farming resources. Before the internet, he would listen to farm radio, read journals and visit with neighbors to enlighten his knowledge of agriculture. Hubert was also determined to produce top caliber livestock. He bought dairy cattle from Wisconsin to start a successful dairy operation. He attended livestock auctions and consulted with cattle and swine buyers to select prime stock for breeding and production on his farm. After a lifetime of farming, which began with horses cultivating fields and concluded with highly technical irrigation and mechanized equipment, Hubert retired in Hartington. He continued to judge and observe fields whenever riding in a vehicle. It is fitting that he was interned near the farmland he so loved. Family survivors include his children and spouses: Robert and Marlene (Domier) Uhing of Yankton, SD; Daryl and Dorothy (Uhing) Guenther of Crofton, NE; Ronald Uhing of Cleveland OH; Lawrence and Betsy (Ross) Uhing of Grand Island, NE; Richard and Mary Kay (Becker) Uhing of Norfolk, NE; Russell and Kim (Buhl) Uhing of Lincoln. Hubert is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Leann on December 12, 2018; son Harold; brothers Edmund and Cyril; sisters, Bernice and Julia Leise.
