Gary Kieth Kinney

Gary Kieth Kinney, age 79 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at the Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln, Nebraska after a short battle with lung cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, September 24, 2018 at 10:30 am at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. Jim Keiter officiating. Troop B Honor Guard from the State Patrol will have honors at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will be at 3:00 pm on Monday in St. Michael’s Cemetery in West Point, Nebraska with Deacon Dave Baumert officiating and military honors provided by the West Point American Legion Post 70, the West Point VFW Post 4912 and the American Legion Riders. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 4:30 pm at the church. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am on Monday at the church. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln. Pallbearers are Kenny Meier, Ron Tighe, Judy Janssen and Bill Fitzgerald, all State Troopers, Larry Koranda and Kevin Garvin, Cedar County Sheriff’s office. Gary was born on January 29, 1939 at Bloomfield, NE to Herb Otto and Iola Arlene (Davis) Kinney. He graduated from West Point High School in 1957 and attended Wayne state College in Wayne, NE. Gary served in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1966. He married Lois Tingelhoff on October 7, 1967 in West Point. Gary joined the Nebraska State Patrol in 1966 and served until 1996. He was the Chief of Police for Hartington from 1997 to 2001 and worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Cedar County from 2001 to 2009. Gary was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and had a Holy Hour of Adoration for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Hartington VFW Post 5283, Am Vets and STAN (State Troopers Association of Nebraska). He was a counselor at the Holy Trinity Youth Camp at Tinturn Monastery from 2003 to 2006. He loved Nebraska football, traveling and attending all of his kids and grandkids activities. His favorite saying was Salamat Kaibigan which means “Thank you my friend” in Filipino. Gary is survived by his wife, Lois Kinney of Hartington, 5 children, Jeff and Becky Kinney of Elkhorn; Kathy and Rob Miller of Lincoln; Ann and Doug Burch of Gretna, NE; Brian Kinney of Westminster, CO; Mark and Erin Kinney of Elkhorn; 12 grandchildren, a sister, Sherry and Bill Rasmus of West Point and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Kathy Kinney and a brother, Robert Hoesing.
