Dorothy Lyngstad was born March 26, 1947, in Vancouver, Washington, to Joseph and Gladys (Cook) Drury. Her father worked in construction which caused the family to move a lot through her school years. First to Colorado Springs, Colorado, then Fort Pierre, South Dakota and then Bonesteel, South Dakota, where she graduated from Bonesteel High School in 1966. She married Roger Lyngstad on September 16, 1967, in Bonesteel and then moved to Volin, South Dakota to live with his parents and help on the farm. They moved into their own home in 1971 and continued to help on the farm and raise their family. In 1984, after her children were in school, Dorothy began her 21-year career as a correctional officer. She first worked at the state prison in Springfield, South Dakota and then at the trustee unit in Yankton. While she was working in Yankton she also worked part-time as a police officer in Irene, South Dakota. She was very proud of her career in law enforcement and her service to the community.
Dorothy was a spunky, hardworking, strong willed, sentimental woman who would keep anything that reminded her of a good time or was given to her by someone she cared about. She enjoyed listening to George Strait and watching reality TV. She especially loved her family. She was very proud of her children, adored all of her grandchildren & great-grandchildren and talked about them often.
