Donovan was born on June 12, 1944 at home on the farm near Bow Valley to Edwin Ivo and Loretta Clara (Arens) Pick. He grew up on the farm and began high school at St. Lawrence Catholic Seminary in Wisconsin. In 1962, he graduated from Holy Trinity High School and then joined the Army National Guard. He was posted to Ft. Knox for training and served through the Guards station in Wagner, SD. Donovan began working for Art Kathol Appliance in Bow Valley after his return. He married Nancy Bottolfson on November 25, 1967 at Holy Trinity church in Hartington. After their marriage, they purchased the hardware store in Fordyce from Frank Dietsche. They owned and operated Don’s Hardware in Fordyce for about 30 years. Donovan was known around the area for making service calls at any hour, to fix electrical, plumbing, HVAC, septic systems and do any general repairs. He also built a number of homes and livestock barns. He sold the business in 1999, and turned to full-time farming and raising cattle. Donovan farmed the homestead one mile south of Bow Valley until he retired about 10 years ago. Donovan was a member of the Holy Family Church. In the 1970s, he proudly coached a winning tug of war team. He loved gardening and raised so much he was able to provide many of his friends and neighbors with lots of produce. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing cards and games, woodworking and anything that allowed him to be outdoors. Family vacations were always a highlight for him. Donovan is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy Pick, of Bow Valley; 2 daughters, Tracy Lane of Sioux Falls, SD; Tonya and Quenton Mortensen of Curtis, NE; a granddaughter, Daisy Mortensen, 2 sisters, Rita Hoesing of Menominee, NE; Eileen Wieseler of Bow Valley; 2 brothers, Larry and Donna Pick of Bow Valley and Dan and Mary Pick of Bow Valley, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law, John Lane, a brother Kenneth Pick, 2 brothers–in-law, George Kleinschmit and Delano Hoesing..
