Donald Wayne Anderson

Donald Wayne Anderson, age 95, of Yankton, South Dakota, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at home with his family by his side. Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend David Wildermuth officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton with military honors by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 and the US Navy Funeral Honor Guard. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, December 7, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Pallbearers are his grandsons: Travis and Shaun Koster, Ryan Anderson, Michael and Patrick Kennedy, Tyler, Jared and Keagan Anderson, and Brad Dickson. Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters: Ashley Matzke, Vanessa Anderson and Callie Tennant. Donald was born on August 14, 1923, in Trent, South Dakota to Ole M. and Emma (Nelson) Anderson. He grew up on a farm and went to grade school at Nelson School. He graduated from Trent High School in 1941. Don served in the US Navy during World War II and was discharged in 1946. He was also a member of the Navy Reserves until his discharge in 1952. Don married Dorothy Olson on November 29, 1947. To this union, five children were born and raised: Steven, Jackie, Gail, Kevin and Janell. He completed an accounting degree at Nettleton College in Sioux Falls and started working for Beckman Construction Company in Sioux Falls. He dedicated 16 years to this company as an accountant and superintendent. This career provided several moves throughout Wyoming and South Dakota while he and Dorothy enjoyed raising their family. After the owner of Beckman Construction passed away, Don decided to move to Yankton in 1965 to take the opportunity to co-found Kolberg Manufacturing. The business began with manufacturing aggregate handling, sand classification and water treatment equipment. In 1978, the business was sold to Portec and Don stayed on as General Manager. He was instrumental in expanding the firm’s domestic and foreign markets which increased overseas shipments. His leadership helped with the successful 1.6 million dollar expansion in April of 1987 which added 120 new jobs. He retired in 1990. Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc. continues to be a vital economic entity for Yankton. He was a member of the Elks Club, Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce, Yankton Rotary and Veterans of Foreign War. He served on the Board of Hillcrest Country Club, Mount Marty College, South Dakota Railroad and Trinity Lutheran Church. He also served as President of the Manufacturing Association. Don was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 53 years. He and Dorothy enjoyed traveling, golfing, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Don had a wonderful sense of humor and there was not an event that didn’t give him an opportunity to make people laugh. We were lucky to have him, we were truly blessed, and he will be deeply missed. Don is survived by his wife of 71 years, Dorothy Anderson of Yankton; three daughters: Jackie (Jerry) Koster of Yankton, Gail (Craig) Kennedy of Yankton, Janell (Tom) Dickson of De Pere, WI; son, Kevin (Julie) Anderson of Mount Prospect, IL; daughter-in-law, Patricia (Kilbride) Anderson of Mitchell, SD; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Gordon Anderson of Dell Rapids, SD; two sisters, Dorcas Youel of Dell Rapids and Rhoda Otten of Sioux Falls, SD; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Ruth & Jim Haugen of Baltic, SD; brother-in-law, Bud Skancke of Baltic; and many nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven W. Anderson; granddaughter, Iszabella Morgan; sister, Helen Woodhouse; brothers, Byron Anderson, Merle Anderson and Warren Anderson; and many special sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
