Dennis Sigurd Blaalid, age 70, of Yankton South Dakota, died suddenly on Thursday, February 6, 2020, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton, South Dakota with Reverend Scott Traynor officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton at a later date. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, February 10, 2020 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a vigil service at 7:00 PM.
Dennis Sigurd Blaalid was born May 26, 1949 in Scotland, South Dakota to Edward and Esther (Evenson) Blaalid. He spent his toddler years on the family farm near the Scotland/Menno area and then moved with his family to Yankton, South Dakota where he graduated from Yankton High School in 1967. Dennis then went on to marry Sandy Wies on August 9, 1974 in Creighton, Nebraska. They lived in Yankton where Dennis was the co-owner of the Butcher Block. He then became the regional manager at Deli Express. Dennis has had several careers many of them in sales where he excelled. Later Dennis became a mental health aid for the State of South Dakota at the Human Services Center. Dennis also worked for his brothers Norm and Ken at different points in his life. He loved spending time with his family.
Dennis was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Yankton Elks Lodge. He was a soft hearted man who had a very strong work ethic and touched the lives of many people throughout his careers. Dennis had an infectious smile and laugh and loved being around people. He enjoyed boating, traveling, riding his motorcycle, attending concerts, listening to music, trying to master the art of smoking meats and playing Sudoku. His family always came first and he loved spending time with them and going on family vacations. Dennis especially enjoyed the times spent with his grandson, Kellen. Dennis loved deeply and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy Blaalid of Yankton; three children: Brian Blaalid of Yankton; Emily (Bill Harned) Blaalid of Fort Collins, CO; and Katie Blaalid of Fort Collins, CO; grandson, Kellen Blaalid; brother, Norm (Joann) Blaalid of Yankton; two sisters-in-law: Marlys Blaalid of Yankton and Jeanne Blaalid of Mitchell, SD; and many nieces and nephews that he adored.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Esther Blaalid, parents-in-law: Donald and Helen Wies, two brothers: Art and Ken Blaalid; sister, Elsie Metz; brother-in-law, Lawrence Metz; three nephews: Douglas and Jeff Blaalid, Derrick Goedeker and Niece Barbie Blaalid.
