Darlene P. Burns, age 91, of Laurel, Nebraska died on August 19, 2018 at Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel, Nebraska.
Funeral Services will be on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at United Lutheran Church in Laurel, Nebraska with the Rev. Matt Quanbeck officiating. Burial will be at the Laurel cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, at church, from 5-7:00 p.m. with a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home of Laurel, NE.
Pallbearers will be Darlene’s grandsons, Bob Pigg, Tony Lawyer, Matt Lawyer, Nick Lawyer, Tyler Rager, and Travis Rager.
Darlene was born on January 1, 1927 in Homer, Nebraska to Peter and Edith “Pearl” (Green) Kautz. She grew up in Homer and graduated from Homer High School in 1946. Darlene married Clair Pigg on June 2, 1946 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Homer. She and Clair lived and farmed northeast of Homer until 1970 when they moved to their farm south of Laurel. Clair died on October 21, 1976. Darlene then married Harold Burns on November 11, 1978 in Laurel. Darlene and Harold moved into Laurel in 1996. Harold died on August 4, 2010.
Darlene was a member of the United Lutheran Church and the Ladies Circle. She belonged to several card clubs, loved dancing, bowling, golfing, planting flowers and traveling. While in Homer, she belonged to the Green Thumb Garden Club. Darlene was active in 4H, enjoyed sewing, embroidering, gardening, canning, and raising her own chickens, and she was an excellent cook. She enjoyed having people over to her home, where she loved to decorate and entertain. She was especially proud of her outdoor Christmas display each year.
Darlene is survived by her three children, Linda Rager of Mankato, MN, Dave (Margie) Pigg of LeMars, IA, Scott (Barbara) Pigg of Laurel; daughter-in-law Bernita Pigg of Laurel; step-children Pat (Harley) Reinoehl of Blair, Jean Muller of Omaha, Steve Burns of Omaha, Monte (Linda) Burns of Laurel, Tom (Lori) Burns of Laurel, Betty (Bob) Rager of Emerson, Don (Lori) Burns of Norfolk, Ken (Chris) Burns of Arizona and Judy (Don) Jorgensen of Randolph. And (including step) 31 grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, and 1 great,great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clair Pigg, husband Harold Burns, son Kent Pigg, sister Genevieve Fitzwilliams, brother Kermit Kautz, niece/sister Jacquelyn Pigg; and; step-daughter Nicole Burns, step-grandson Brandon Burns, and step son-in-law “Skip” Muller.
