Cheryl M. Hovorka, age 65, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Wednesday, December 4, 2019 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 AM, on Monday, December 9, 2019 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Scott Traynor officiating. Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in Tabor, South Dakota. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Sunday, December 8 at St. Benedict Catholic Church with a vigil service at 7:00 PM. Visitation continues one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Pallbearers are Dave Auch, Art Cuka, Jerry Hovorka, Tim Hovorka, Dan Hunhoff and Dave Mendez.
Cheryl was born May 8, 1954 in Tyndall, South Dakota to Willard R. and Irene (Cuka) Hovorka. She grew up on a farm near Tabor and attended Wilson Country School. Cheryl then attended Tabor High School and graduated from Tabor-Tyndall High School in 1972. She went on and received her business degree from the University of South Dakota in Springfield. After college, she lived in Yankton and worked at TCI, which later became Gehl Manufacturing. In February of 1992, Cheryl began working in the Political Science Department at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and was currently employed there. Cheryl was very active in many organizations. She was currently serving as the President for the Tabor American Legion Auxiliary and Director of American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of SD. She was also serving as the Chairman for both the VA Christmas Party and Gift Shop at the Human Services Center. Cheryl was very patriotic and loved her country. She was so proud of her niece who is serving in the US Air Force. Cheryl was also an active member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters. She was an avid USD Coyote fan and enjoyed bowling. She loved following her nieces and nephews in their sporting events and sending cards to her family.
Cheryl is survived by her mother, Irene Hovorka of Yankton; brother, Ron (Gail) Hovorka of Tabor; four nieces and nephews: Heidi Hovorka (Dave Mendez) of Eagle River, AK, Chad Hovorka of Tyndall, Marc Hovorka of Yankton and Ashley Hovorka (Brett Heine) of Yankton; one great nephew, Breyer Heine; her beloved dog, Goldie; and many cousins and friends.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her father, Willard R. Hovorka and special friend, Lyle Magorien Sr.
