  Carmelita Alonzo, age 88, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Friday, January 26, 2018 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Larry Regynski officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, on Monday, February 5 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 6:45 PM and vigil service at 7:00 PM. Visitation also continues one hour prior to the funeral at the church.

Carmelita was born August 22, 1929 in the Philippines to Joaquin and Rufina (Reyes) Clemente. She graduated high school from the Pilar Institution and then went on to Nurse’s Training at Zamboanga General Hospital and studied at the Philippine Women University. Carmelita was sponsored by Cuyahoga County and moved to Cleveland, Ohio. There she met Leoncio Alonzo and they were married August 18, 1956. They moved to Yankton in 1966. Carmelita studied psychology at Mount Marty College and worked as a registered nurse at the Human Services Center in Yankton for over 25 years, retiring in 1994. Carmelita was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and assisted with Meals on Wheels. She loved gardening and caring for her plants. She was always ready and willing to help anyone in need.

Carmelita is survived by her daughter, Irene Alonzo of Cleveland, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Leoncio on July 26, 1987. To send an online message to the family, please visit www.wintzrayfuneralhome.com.
