Arliss (Berndt) Hellmann, age 89, formerly of Irene, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, South Dakota.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, on Friday, April 19, 2024 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota followed by a graveside service at 2:00 PM at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton with Reverend Mark Ostrem officiating.
Arliss was born May 31, 1934 in Tyndall, South Dakota to Arthur and Louise (Grimme) Berndt. At the age of 17, she moved to California with some friends to pursue her dreams. This is where she met her future husband who was serving in the Korean War. Arliss married Dilbert Hellmann in Monrovia, California on October 14, 1954. They lived in the Crofton, Nebraska area until 1974 and then moved to Tabor, South Dakota to farm. After retiring from farming in 2008, they moved to Irene, South Dakota, where their daughter lived. Dilbert died on January 24, 2016. Besides helping on the farm, Arliss did factory work and worked at various nursing homes. She had wanted to be a nurse. Arliss loved houseplants, gardening and rummaging.
Arliss is survived by three children: Aaron (Geralyn) Hellmann of Tabor, Jodi Sherman of Irene, and John Hellmann of Sioux Falls; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild on the way; sister, Sharon (Willis) Olson of Humboldt, SD; brother, Loren (Judy) Berndt of Harrisburg, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Arliss was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings: Martha, Alice, Art Jr., Dwayne, Roger, Myron and Bill; granddaughter, Shannon Davis; and grandson, Joshua Davis.
