Alice Laureen Gatzemeyer, age 65 of Newcastle, Nebraska died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital in Vermillion, SD.
Private family Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at 11:00 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Newcastle, Nebraska with Reverend Andy Sohm officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Newcastle. Visitation will be on Friday, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm with a vigil service at 7:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska. Facemasks and social distancing will be observed and required for the visitation and funeral. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Alice was born on October 21, 1954 in Yankton, SD to Leonard Joseph and Mary Marjorie (Day) Pinkelman. She grew up in the St. James and Wynot area. She attended Sts. Philip & James Elementary School until it closed and consolidated in 1968. She graduated from Cedar Catholic High School in 1973.
Alice married the love of her life, John Gatzemeyer on August 3, 1974. Alice and her best friend and partner, John, made their home in the Newcastle area. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the St. Peter’s Catholic Women’s Guild.
During her life, Alice worked at several places, including the Village Café in Newcastle, Menards in Sioux City, Coyote Canyon in Sioux City, Newcastle High School as a cook, and lastly at the Vermillion schools as a cook. Alice loved her cats and all other animals on the farm. She was loved by so many people and will be greatly missed.
Alice is survived by her loving husband, John of Newcastle, NE; brother, Raymond Pinkelman of Yankton, SD; sister, Carol (Harold) Goeden of Wells, MN; John’s siblings, Shirley Carper of Valley, NB, Betty Lou (Bob) McCormick of Gilbert, AZ, Kathy Watkins of Dakota City, NE, Robert (Donna) Gatzemeyer of Tekamah, NB, Tom (Jane) Gatzemeyer of Rocheport, MO; lots of loving nieces, nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard & Mary Pinkelman; John’s parents, Earl & Anna Gatzemeyer; three brothers, Gerald, Martin, and Ronald Pinkelman; and many aunts and uncles.
