Alfred E. Steffen, age 80 of Atlantic, Iowa, died on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Heritage House in Atlantic. A Memorial Service will be on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 10:30 am at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska with Rev. Russ Lambert officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be in the Lawn Ridge Cemetery in Coleridge, Nebraska with military honors provided by the Coleridge American Legion Post 114 and the American Legion Riders. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday. Alfred was born November 20, 1937, in Hartington, Nebraska, the son of Ernest Carl and Ethel (Coleman) Steffen. He attended school and graduated from Hartington Public High School in 1955. After graduating, he joined the US Army where he served from 1955 – 1957. After being discharged from the service, he joined the Iowa State Patrol, and served as a State Trooper for 20 years. He then became a restaurant owner in Atlantic. He owned the T&C Drive In and Country Kitchens. Al was also the co-owner and operator of AK Ambulance in Atlantic. Alfred married Marlys Joan Palmer on March 18, 1972, in Omaha, NE. He was a resident of Atlantic and Ottumwa, IA, Osage Beach, MO, and Sun City AZ . He was active in the Elks, Moose, Eagles, American Legion and a member of the Lutheran Church. He enjoyed dancing, woodworking, golfing, bowling and boating. Al enjoyed the times vacationing with Jerry and Connie Wiedenfeld. Family and friends were very important to Al. Alfred is survived by his wife, Marlys Steffen of Atlantic, IA; daughters, Cindy Willingham of Atlantic, IA and Karla (Tim) Akers of Anita, IA; grandchildren, Misha Watts of Springfield, Mo, Phillip (Diann) Shull of Columbia, MO, Kara Shull of Manhattan, NY, and Benjamin (Sarah) Shull of Chicago, IL; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ethel Steffen; his sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Ray Wiedenfeld and Geraldine and Duane Purcell. Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2018, at Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic, Iowa.
