A. Marie Smith, age 96, of Yankton, South Dakota died on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton. It was Marie’s wish to have her body donated to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and a memorial service for Marie will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton. A. Marie Smith was born October 7, 1921 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Nellie Robinson and Louis Schumacher. Marie grew up in the Lead-Deadwood area graduating from high school in 1941. She moved to Washington D.C. working for the Veterans Administration until 1949. Marie returned to the Yankton area marrying George W. Smith. They were divorced in 1970. She moved to Western South Dakota in the early 70’s working for various state agencies until her retirement. Marie returned to the Yankton area in 1990 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Marie is survived by her children: Rick (Julie) Smith of Crivitz, Wisconsin, Norma (Dave) Goos of Lake City, Florida, Randy (Joleen) Smith of Yankton, Marla (Doug) Gibbons of Thornton, Colorado, and Gary Smith (Joni Lowe) of Mission Hill; several grandchildren and many great grandchildren; and a half-brother, Doug (Joyce) Schumacher of Rapid City.
