Keith Wahl, age 61, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Saturday, October 17, 2015, peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM on Friday, October 23, 2015, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, South Dakota with Pastor Jeff Mueller officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service on Friday at the funeral home.

Keith was born September 12, 1954, in Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was born to Alfred and Bernice (Gross) Wahl. His education began near Emery, South Dakota, two miles from the family farm at Taylor #5 Country School. He went to Emery High School and eventually moved to Yankton, South Dakota in 1969, where he eagerly graduated from Yankton High School.

After graduating, Keith worked in Yankton until 1975. In 1975, he was in a car accident that severed his spinal cord, paralyzing him from the neck down. He then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota while going through rehabilitation, and also attended Hennepin Country Junior College for a couple semesters. After moving back to Yankton, he attended Mount Marty College, but had to quit due to health issues. He later went back to classes at USD, but had to quit once again due to health complications.

Keith met the love of his life, Ann Fields in 1998, and they continued their life in Yankton. Before his injury, Keith enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, motorcycles, and having fun with his friends. After he became paralyzed, he liked listening to music, computers, meeting new people, and going places.

Keith is survived by Ann Fields, of Yankton, South Dakota; step-daughter Brittany (Jeff) Mueller of Yankton; step-son, Dan Fields (Barb Kost) of Yankton; and his grandson, Gunnar; brother, Sid (Deb) Wahl of Elk Point, South Dakota; nephew Brian (Amber) Wahl and their children, Kennedy and Camille; nephew, Jake (Tracy) Wahl of Tea, South Dakota; brother, Gary Wahl of Yankton; and sister, Carol Wahl of Alexandria, Minnesota.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Bernice Wahl.

So sorry to hear of Keith's passing, but his new life in God's house will be so much easier for him. It has been many years since I spoke with Keith and his family, worked with his mother Bernice a long time ago and met Keith & Sid through her. My sincere condolences to the entire family and remember that Keith will be missed, but has joined those that passed before him, in such a better place.

Sid, Gary, Carol, and family. I am sorry to hear about Keith's passing. We did a lot of crazy stuff together over the years and he will be missed. His attitude and smart a#@ remarks made for never a dull moment around him.

RIP my friend Mark Pierce

I recently retired from the South Dakota Division of Rehabilitation Services after forty years. During that time, over a period of several years, I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Keith as my client. I came to like Keith very much and respected him a great deal for his good attitude toward life and his circumstances. I also respected his resolve in trying to overcome his disability and to be as productive as he could be. As you know, his health issues interfered greatly with his ability to complete his college education and to attain a gainful career in business management and computers. I know he tried his best to overcome the many hardships in his life and I don't think he ever lost his determination and sense of humor in this process. I was saddened to learn of his passing. He was one of my favorite clients and I always enjoyed my time with him. My deepest sympathies are with his family. May God bless Keith, as he moves into the next life, and you.

Sid, Deb, boys and families,

My heart hurts with the news of Keith's passing. Such a wonderful guy who taught us all so much, without even knowing he was doing so. If anyone knew how to get passed the struggles that life brings us, it was Keith. Heaven gained a new Angel today, one that will be missed by many he left behind. God's blessings and hugs to each of you. May the memories you have of Keith fill the void in your hearts and bring peace within.
