Reta Velzy, age 87, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Memorial services are 7:00 PM, on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Ken Lulf officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be at the Little Dane Cemetery in St. Onge, South Dakota at a later date.
Reta Lorraine Velzy was born February 16, 1930 in Deadwood, South Dakota to Ellis and Sena (Wolfsberg) Furois. As a child, she had polio and learned to overcome many adversities. After almost a year in the hospital, she went home and learned to walk with crutches and took classes by mail. After several years, Reta went back to high school in Lead, South Dakota and was the Homecoming Queen and graduated as Valedictorian. She went on to attend college at St. Mary's in Wisconsin. On June 17, 1955, Reta married James Velzy in St. Onge, South Dakota. They lived in various places throughout the country before settling in Yankton in 1970. She learned to drive and took many classes over the years, graduating from Mount Marty College in Yankton. Reta was very artistic and loved drawing, calligraphy, watercolor and oil painting. She also loved nature, the outdoors and all animals. She enjoyed horseback riding and the company of her many pets. Above all, Reta loved her family, especially her grandchildren.
Reta is survived by her husband, James Velzy of Yankton; daughter, Tena (Doug) Tyree of Gayville, SD; three grandchildren: Mindy (Jason) Larsen of Sioux Falls, SD, Dustin Holdorf (Samie Hansen) of Yankton, and Richard Tyree of Winnemucca, NV; and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Reta was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Leonard Furois; and three sisters: Frankie Marta, Edith Egan and Neta Marta.

Reta was such a sweet, talented person who had such a sweet spirit in spite of the many difficulties in her life. I wish I could have been able to get to know her better, but I treasure times with her going back many years. May God strengthen all of you in her family.
