Arlene Hartman was born September 24, 1926 in Delmont, South Dakota, to John and Katherine (Neu) Hartman. She grew up and received her education in Delmont. Her family was very musical and Arlene's brothers would play at barn dances where Arlene would often sing and play the guitar. Her fondest childhood memory was playing with her youngest brother, Leonard, making mud pies. Her family was very important to her and her older sister, Tillie Schuh was one of the biggest influences in her life.
She married Richard Wentz in 1945 and moved to Yankton where she began working for Wendy Earl Breander at a café, where he taught her to stand up straight and smile at the customers. She married Leonard Toczek on September 24, 1961 in Yankton. They later moved to Sioux Falls where they continued to live for over 30 years. Arlene truly loved being a housewife, while they lived in Sioux Falls. After Leonard went to be with the Lord in 2009, Arlene then moved to Jefferson, South Dakota to be closer to her family. Arlene enjoyed dancing, her cat Susie Q, and most of all spending time with her friend she never forgot, Agnes Hoiem.
Survivors include her daughter, Dianna (Terry) Jungemann of Jefferson, South Dakota; five grandchildren: Charlotte (Joseph) Keen of Florida; Bill Wentz of Florida; Zane (Misty) Jungemann of Jefferson; Shane (Shaunna) Jungemann of Jefferson; and Chad Jungemann of Dallas, Texas; six great grandchildren: Christopher, Brian, Natalie, Carson, Maeve, and Katherine McKenzi; brother, Leonard (Mildred) Hartman of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; brother-in-law, Virgil Thelan of Mitchell, South Dakota; two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Vitek Kostel of Yankton; and Marian Hartman of Sioux Falls; and numerous nieces and nephews.
