Lyle E. Thomas, age 89 of Lincoln, Nebraska and formerly of Coleridge, Nebraska, died on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Coleridge with the Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial will be at the St. Michael's Cemetery in Coleridge with military rites by the Coleridge American Legion Post 114. Visitation will be on Monday from 5-8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, at church, one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Nathan Schnieders, Kyle Thomas, Jason Thomas, Sean Thomas, Dalton Thomas, Ryan Falter, and Collin Falter.
Lyle Emil Thomas was born on October 9, 1924 in Burke, SD to LeRoy and Anna C. (Pochop) Thomas. He lived in Burke and Winner, South Dakota until moving to Plainview, Nebraska in 1937. Lyle graduated from Plainview High School in 1942. He graduated from the Air Cadet Program and served in the Air Force in WWII from 1943-1945. Lyle served as a Bombardier, flying on 26 missions. Lyle married Dolores Marian DeMuth on June 11, 1946 in Plainview, NE. They moved to Coleridge in 1948 and he managed the Great Plains Supply company until he retired in 1983. Lyle then sold Hardware for the Wyeth Company for two years and then worked for Hoffart Motor Company in Coleridge for seven years. Dolores died on March 22, 2001 in Norfolk, NE at the age of 75 years. Lyle married Verlyn (Fink) Falter on November 1, 2002 in Norfolk, Nebraska. They lived in Norfolk and then moved to Lincoln, NE in 2013.
Lyle was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and former President of the Parish Council. He was the first lector of the church. He belonged to the Coleridge American Legion Post 114; was Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Norfolk, a member of the Coleridge Commercial Club for over 35 years where he held all the offices; a Coleridge Volunteer Fireman for 26 years; on the Coleridge School Board for 13 years and on the Cedar Catholic School Board for 3 years. Lyle liked golfing, dancing, playing cards, carpentry, fixing things, and travelling to High School sporting events. He even did some umpiring in his younger years and refereed into his sixties.
Lyle is survived by his wife Verlyn Thomas of Lincoln, NE; six children and their spouses, Mark and Roberta Thomas of Grass Valley, CA, Linda Carroll of Omaha, NE, Sharon and Dan Schnieders of Omaha, NE, Janet and Bruce Clure of Omaha, NE, Greg and Cindy Thomas of Lincoln, NE, Michael Thomas of Norfolk, NE; four stepchildren Randee and Jacque Falter of Pierce, NE, Jeannine Falter and husband David Keck of Lincoln, NE, Jon Falter of Lincoln, NE, Barry and Pat Falter of Lincoln, NE, 17 grandchildren; 13step-grandchildren; 12great grandchildren; 4 step-great grandchildren; one brother Leonard Thomas of Arnold, CA; one sister Dorothy Pfund of Laguna Hills, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Dolores; two brothers Clarence Thomas and LeRoy Thomas; sister Wilma Korthas.

May God wrap His loving arms around each of you at this very sad time. Tommy was my favorite uncle...always teasing me and pulling on my pigtails. :) He always had a smile on his face and even played hide and go seek whenever I wanted. I love you Uncle Tommy and I look forward to seeing you again on the "streets of gold".
