Mary Ann Thoene, age 84 of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at her residence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 10:30 am at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. Jeffery Loseke officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Hartington. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at the church. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Brandon Thoene, Neil Thoene, Jesse Thoene, Tony Thoene, Bill Lucht, John Lucht and Adam Lammers. Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Olivia Witte, Lindsay Scott, Brea Frick, Chrissy McGraw, Laurie Lammers, Mandy Bruning, Amy Pinkelman, Angela Johnson, Alena Thoene, Kimberley Hamilton, Nichole Thoene, Melissa Thoene, Matt Thoene, Zach Thoene, James Thoene, Rachel Year, Justine Year, Tracy Thoene, Trisha Thoene, Tosha Thoene and Tara Thoene.

Mary Ann was born on June 2, 1929 at Hartington to Otto Frederick and Ruth (Elliott) Schwartz. She grew up in the Hartington area and married Clarence "Bud" Thoene on September 17, 1946 at Hartington. They farmed in the Bow Valley area until they moved to a farm northwest of Hartington in 1954. In 1979 they moved into Hartington and spent from 1982 to 1984 living in Bella Vista, Arkansas before returning to Hartington. Mary Ann had many jobs from working at Tooties, Ben Franklin, the Smokehouse Restaurant in Arkansas, the Senior Center in Hartington and the Golden Living Center coordinating activities and caring for the elderly. She was a former 4-H Leader and CCD teacher for many years. Mary Ann belonged to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Guild, Christian Mothers, had a Perpetual Hour of Adoration and was a member of the Hartington VFW Post 5283 Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She had a very busy life with 8 kids, 28 grandkids and 44 great grandkids.

Mary Ann is survived by 8 children, Duane and Debbie Thoene of Lincoln, Nebraska; Debi and Steve Lucht of Hartington; Connie and Dennis Schmadeke of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Darell and Joyce Thoene of Hartington; Bruce and Clara Thoene of Omaha; Brian and Pam Thoene of Norfolk, Nebraska; Cheri Year of Hartington; Don and Tonya Thoene of Bella Vista, Ark; 28 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and a sister, Karlyn Lewis of Hartington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clarence on July 16, 1997 at the age of 77, a brother, Leo Schwartz, 2 sisters, Lucille Meyer and Shirley Volquardsen.

I am sorry that these words of sympathy are so late in being sent, just found the web sight. I am so glad that we can tell you how much Mary Anne meant to us. She helped my husband's aunt[Schwarzenbach] in the early 90's and remained a friend to us for many years. Always full of fun and good ideas. Will always treasure the pillowcase dolls she made for us.
