Alton G. "Dick" Thoene, age 92 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Thursday, October 16, 2014 at the Norfolk Veterans Home in Norfolk, NE.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Jeffery Loseke officiating. Burial will be in the Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Bow Valley, NE. Visitation will be on Sunday, at church, from 2-5:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to services at church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Jeff Bruning, Matt Thoene, Glen Thoene, Ben Pinkelman, Shawn Cannon, and Mark Thoene.
Alton George Thoene was born on February 22, 1922 in Hartington, NE to John and Kathryn (Bonertz) Thoene Sr. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and graduated from Hartington High School in 1939. Dick joined the National Guard on November 20, 1939 and then served in the U.S. Army from December 23, 1940 until his honorable discharge on October 8, 1945. Dick served in WWII and was in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war he moved back near Hartington and farmed the family farm. He married Dolores Irene Steinhauser on October 4, 1950 in Stuart, NE. In 1962 Dick sold cars for Miller Motors and then was the manager of the Fordyce Elevator. His last employment was a mail carrier on Route #1 for 27 years.
Dick was a former member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bow Valley, the Bow Valley Park Association, Knights of Columbus- earning 4th Degree; life member Hartington VFW Post #5283; Wynot American Legion Post 31. Dick was a past commander of the VFW and also served as the Quarter Master. He loved going to auctions, playing cards, and gardening, gambling, and keeping the squirrels off his bird feeder.
Dick is survived by his wife Dolores of Hartington; six children and spouses Susan Thoene of Hartington, NE, Sharleen and Bob Bruning of Wynot, NE, Donna and Ed Koch of Fordyce, NE, Violet and Stephen Pinkelman of Wynot, NE, Robert and Laureen Thoene of Hartington, Bill and Marilyn Thoene of Hartington; 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one brother and spouse Charlie and Ruth Thone of Lincoln, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers John Thoene Jr. and wife Rose, Cliff and wives Sally and Betsy Thoene; baby sister Violet; brother-in-law Harvey Steinhauser.
