Miles Gary Standish, age 69 of Laurel, Nebraska, died on Monday, September 14, 2015 at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, Nebraska.
Visitation will be on Thursday. September 17, 2015 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 8:00 pm at the United Lutheran Church in Laurel with Rev. Lynn Qualm officiating. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is in charge of arrangements. No other services are planned.
Miles was born in Ft. Worth, Texas on April 16, 1946 to Miles Arthur and Lucille Ione (Becker) Standish. His father was in Air Force so Miles spent the first part of his life traveling. He lived in Japan for several years before coming back to the states. When he was 10 he went to live and grew up in Heron Lake, Minnesota and moved to Tempe, Arizona in 1962. Miles graduated from Tempe High School in 1964 and then earned a bachelor's degree from Arizona State University and a graduate degree in mortuary science in California. He married Joyce A. Walton on May 12, 1972 in Phoenix, Arizona. After their marriage they lived in Tempe and moved to Chandler, Arizona in 1982. He worked for a short time as a funeral director and spent most of his life as a mortgage broker. Miles moved to Laurel to live with his daughter, Nicole, in June of 2012. Miles loved watching sports, especially the Arizona Diamondbacks. He also liked playing cards and was an excellent bowler.
Miles is survived by his daughters Dawn Marie (Christopher) Cort of Snohomish, Washington and their children, Elizabeth Jane and Josephine, Cort, Nicole Williams of Laurel, Nebraska and her children Brittany and Ethan Williams, his aunt who raised him, Ramona Bult of Tempe, AZ, his four sisters Michelle (Tyler) Nordstrom of Florida, Tammy Hammond of Tempe, AZ, Ramona (John) Barrett of Buckeye, AZ, and Jackie Grove of Chandler, AZ.
Miles was preceded in death by his father, his mother, his uncle who raised him, Wayne Hammond, and his uncle Robert Bult.

I recently learned of the death of Miles (Gary) Standish, who was a classmate at Heron Lake High School. I remember Gary as a great addition to our small group of students, and he was missed when the family moved. I am happy to hear that he had a productive life, and extend my sympathies to your family for your loss.
