A. Marie Smith, age 96, of Yankton, South Dakota died on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Scott Traynor officiating. The family will receive friends a half hour prior to the service at the church. Marie donated her body to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine and burial will take place at the Beaver Creek Cemetery in rural Crofton, Nebraska at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.

A. Marie Smith was born October 7, 1921 in Rapid City, South Dakota to Nellie Robinson and Louis Schumacher. Marie grew up in the Lead-Deadwood area graduating from high school in 1941. She moved to Washington D.C. working for the Veterans Administration until 1949. Marie returned to the Yankton area marrying George W. Smith. They were divorced in 1970. She moved to Western South Dakota in the early 70's working for various state agencies until her retirement. Marie returned to the Yankton area in 1990 to be closer to her children and grandchildren.

Marie is survived by her children: Rick (Julie) Smith of Crivitz, Wisconsin, Norma (Dave) Goos of Lake City, Florida, Randy (Joleen) Smith of Yankton, Marla (Doug) Gibbons of Thornton, Colorado, and Gary Smith (Joni Lowe) of Mission Hill; several grandchildren and many great grandchildren; and a half-brother, Doug (Joyce) Schumacher of Rapid City.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law.
