Leo George Schulte, age 87 of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the Hartington Care and Rehabilitation Center in Hartington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 10:30 am at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. Owen Korte officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery in Hartington with military honors provided by the Hartington VFW Post 5283 and the American Legion Riders. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 6:00 pm at the church. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. The Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington is assisting with arrangements.

Pallbearers will be John Lange, Sage Schulte, Dean Jansen, Eric Schulte, Rob Hans, and Tim Dresden.

Leo was born on April 24, 1929 in Bow Valley, Nebraska to Anthony John and Elizabeth Gertrude (Schmidt) Schulte. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Hartington in 1946. Leo served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict. He married Lorraine Jansen on July 8, 1953 in Menominee, Nebraska. They made their home in Hartington after their marriage where Leo worked for the Kansas Nebraska Gas Company until he retired in 1989.

Leo was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member and served as a representative of the Communication Workers of America union. Leo was a former member of the Hartington Volunteer Fire Department and was a member and former commander of the Hartington VFW Post 5283. Leo loved to make people laugh - he always had a joke to share. He enjoyed tinkering with things and could fix just about anything. He was a dedicated Nebraska Huskers, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Cubs fan. Leo loved to hunt and fish, and especially loved spending time with family and friends at his cabin on the Missouri river.

Leo is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lorraine of Hartington; 6 children and their spouses, Chris and Rita Schulte of Buffalo, NY; Clark and Debbie Schulte of Glendale, AZ; Colin Schulte of Coleridge, NE; Craig and Marcy Schulte of Hartington; Cathy and Gerald Tramp of Crofton, NE; Conly and Kelly Schulte of Boulder, CO; 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mary Ann Hans of Yankton, SD; June and Linus Lange of Fordyce, NE; 3 brothers, Roger Schulte of Coleridge; Charles and Jenny Schulte of Emerson, NE; and Marty Schulte of South Yankton, NE; sister-in-law Marcie Schulte of St. Helena, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Marvin, Harold and Hubert, 2 sisters, Lucille Keller and Mildred Becker.
