Richard "Dick" Schaefer Sr., age 68, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at his home in Yankton surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 27, 2016, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. A cremation will follow the funeral and burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday at the funeral home.

Richard "Dick" Schaefer was born December 17, 1947, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Wilfred and Mardell (Michaels) Schaefer. He grew up and attended school in Yankton, South Dakota. He married Karen Hedelson on September 5, 1969 in Beresford, South Dakota. They lived in Yankton and Richard worked various jobs in the Yankton area.

Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with friends, spending time with his grandchildren and his dogs. Richard had a big heart and loved his family above everything else. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Schaefer of Yankton; six children: Lori (Steve) Smith of Springfield, South Dakota; Richard (Sarah) Schaefer Jr. of Yankton; Mike (Donna) Schaefer of Yankton; Heather Schaefer of Yankton; Tyler (Miranda) Schaefer of Yankton; and Kyle (Kaitlyn) Schaefer of Vermillion, South Dakota; son-in-law, John Hansen of Freeman, South Dakota; 23 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; brother, Bill (Deb) Schaefer of Yankton; three sisters: Sharlene Gillies of Washington; Jean Birnidelli of Washington; and Sheryl (Bob) Woods of Yankton; three dogs: Gracie, Jack, and Missy; close friends: Tammy Johnson and Little Larry, favorite nurses, Tiffany and Christin; special caregiver, Donna Bodden; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Schaefer; daughter, Lisa Hansen; mother-in-law, Hazel Hedelsen; and sister, Shirley (Larry) Walden.

I am so sorry for this great loss. Growing up I never knew what to say to him as you know he always picked I remember many good times had don't forget those and never forget losing cards to him at Lisas during a snow storm boy did I get into trouble for losing that money as time passes the memories will be enjoyed.

It was always such a joy when Dick stopped at Kettering Law Office and brought in his little puppies (that he loved so much). He was one special guy who was the best process server Doug Kettering used and he will be missed. Prayers to you Karen and your family.
