Joe T. Schaefer, age 87, of Hartington, Nebraska, died Sunday, June 29, 2014 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington.

  Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Jeffery Loseke officiating.  Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington.  Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. with a vigil at 7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington.  Visitation will continue on Thursday one hour prior to services at church.

  Pallbearers will be Tom Cobler Jr., Paul Cobler, Tom Schaefer, Leonard Schaefer, Galen Schaefer, Richard Schaefer, Curt Loecker, and Heath Opfer.  Honorary pallbearers will be Joe's nieces and nephews.

  Joseph Theadore Schaefer was born on July 14, 1926 in Menominee, Nebraska to John J. and Frances (Pinkelman) Schaefer Sr.  He grew up and lived the Menominee area where he helped area farmers as a farmhand.  Joe helped with building of Gavins Point Dam.  In the early 1950's he worked construction for Western Construction Company of Sioux City, Iowa for 11 years.  He then worked for List and Clark Construction Company of Kansas City from 1964 until 1973 as a truck driver.  Joe then worked for Gerry Miller Implement in Hartington as a truck driver from 1977-1992. He retired in 1992.

  Joe was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and enjoyed travelling with Betty and spending the winters in Texas.  He enjoyed baseball and fishing.

  Joe is survived by his wife Betty of Hartington; sister-in-law Anna Marie Schaefer; many nieces and nephews.

  He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Irvin, John Jr. and Norbert Schaefer, three sisters infant sister Mary Schaefer (2 years old), Elizabeth Bowe, and Elnora Hare.
