Theo was born on a farm east of Bow Valley, Nebraska, on March 26, 1918, to Henry Thoene and Mary Clara (Bonertz) Sudbeck Thoene. She joined siblings Adrian Sudbeck, Alvina Sudbeck, and Sylvia Sudbeck. In the next few years, the family was completed with the births of Melvin, Odilia (Dee), and Cyril Thoene. Theo attended country school near Fordcye and grade school in Constance. She attended Fordyce High School for two years, and then chose to transfer to Hartington High School, because she needed courses for nursing school. Theo graduated from Hartington High School in 1937, and then went on to graduate with a nursing degree from Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in Yankton, South Dakota, on May 17, 1945.

After graduating from nursing school, Theo moved to Rush City, Minnesota, where she worked in a small hospital. Theo met the love of her life, Marlyn Rohr, in a little café that she and her friends frequented after work each day. They were married on August 16, 1949, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wynot, Nebraska. Theo and Marlyn lived in Rush City a few more years, before Marlyn was transferred to Tulare, California, with his job. The couple lived in Tulare for many years, before Marlyn's untimely death in December 1968. Although Theo and Marlyn were not blessed with their own children, Theo raised a foster son, Bill Matheny, after Marlyn's death. In May 2003, she moved to Burwell, Nebraska, to be near her brother, Melvin Thoene, and his family. After Melvin's death, Theo chose to move to Hartington, Nebraska, in 2012, where she enjoyed spending time with her sister, Sylvia Arens. Theo resided in Hartington until her death.

Theo will be remembered for her quick wit and remarkable memory. She was an avid reader, loved history, and spent many hours identifying old family photos and telling family stories. Theo had an almost photographic memory and was always happy to share her knowledge with anyone who took the time to listen. She and Marlyn loved to travel, and they took many trips together throughout their married life. Some of her fondest memories were of the time she spent with Marlyn.

In addition to her parents and husband, Theo was preceded in death by an infant brother, Irwin Sudbeck; brothers Adrian Sudbeck, Melvin Thoene, and Cyril Thoene; and sisters Alvina (Sudbeck) Uhing, Odilia (Thoene) Blair, and Sylvia (Sudbeck) Arens. Survivors include numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Messages will be reviewed and posted within 1 business day.

My sympathy to Theo's family. I met Theo when Mom was in the care center. She was always so happy to see you, and a real pleasure to talk to. When Mom passed away, Theo told me she would be my Mom. Bless her heart. She will be missed.

To Theo's family - I am so sorry for your loss. I met Theo when she lived down the hall from my parents (Victor & Hilaria Steffen) at Golden Living. She would remind us that she had attended grade school with dad in Constance and he enjoyed reminiscing with her. Her eyes always lit up when she saw us come visit mom and dad. What a sweet lady who is in Marlyn's arms once again. God Bless!
