Margaret Alma Olson, age 83, of Yankton, South Dakota and formerly of Gayville, South Dakota, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Gayville Lutheran Church in Gayville with Reverend Dan Brandt officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, April 10 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation continues one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Pallbearers are her seven grandchildren.
Margaret was born November 2, 1931 on a farm south of Platte, South Dakota to John and Swantie (Mos) Smit. She graduated from Platte High School in 1949 as the salutatorian of her class. In 1952, Margaret graduated with her Nursing Degree from Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Yankton and then worked at the hospital in Pickstown, South Dakota until 1954. During nursing school, she met her future husband, Glen Olson, and they were united in marriage on March 15, 1954 in Chamberlain, South Dakota. After their marriage, they lived on a farm near Marindahl, South Dakota and began their family. In 1958, they moved to Gayville and Margaret worked at the Human Services Center in Yankton for the next 18 years until her retirement. After retirement, she enjoyed antiquing woodwork. As a teenager, Margaret enjoyed camping and horseback riding along the Missouri River with her friends, Jeanette and Leona. She would also spend a week camping and horseback riding in Wheeler, South Dakota where she enjoyed exploring the hills. Margaret loved her family and watching her grandchildren in their activities. She had a tender heart and a warm smile for everyone she met.
Margaret is survived by three sons: Roger (Lila) Olson of Volin, SD, Craig Olson of Brookings, SD and Doug (Vickie) Olson of Watertown, SD; one daughter, Linda (Kip) Maddox of Yankton; seven grandchildren: Ashli Maddox, Josh (Kalee) Olson, Jessica Olson, Brandon Olson, Adam Maddox and his fiancÚ, Nakita, Kyle Olson and Nathan Olson; one great granddaughter, Avery Sue Rose; three brothers: Wilbur Smit of Platte, SD, Frank (Jerry) Smit of Arvada, CO and Conrad (Gisela) Smit of Norman, OK; and several nieces and nephews.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen Olson on September 4, 2012; and a brother, Roy Smit.
