Rev. Rollin G. Olesen, age 84 of Sioux City, Iowa and formerly of Coleridge and Norfolk, Nebraska died on Monday, September 26, 2016 at the Sunrise Retirement Community in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 11:00 am at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa with Rev. David Halaas officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 pm at Lawn Ridge Cemetery in Coleridge with military honors provided by the Coleridge American Legion Post 114. Visitation will be on Friday from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm at St. Mark Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the ELCA Good Gifts. The Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge in assisting with arrangements.
Pallbearers will be his 7 grandchildren.
Rollin was born on November 20, 1931 in Luck, Wisconsin to George Rasmus and Lucy Irene (Nelson) Olesen. He grew up in Luck and graduated from Luck High School in 1950. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955. He married Beverly Joan Wray on December 26, 1952 in Oakland, CA. Rollin received a Bachelor Degree in English Literature in 1958 from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN. He attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN and was ordained in 1962. From 1962 to 1971 he served Christ Lutheran Church in Stover, MO and from 1971 to 1979 he served Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Denver, CO. At that time, he became Pastor of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge and served there until 1994. Rollin served as an interim pastor at St. John's Lutheran Church in Norfolk from 1994 to 1996 when he retired. They moved to Sioux City, IA in 2011 and became members of St. Mark Lutheran Church.
Rollin provided leadership in the Central District of the ALC and the Nebraska Synod of the ELCA. He loved to fish and read. He was on the founding board of the Coleridge Community Education Foundation as well as an avid supporter of school activities of the community.
Rollin is survived by his wife, Beverly Olesen of Sioux City, IA; 4 children and their spouses, Mark and Casey Olesen of Golden, CO; Julie and Mark Heidt of Brighton, CO; Kris and Pam Olesen of Commerce City, CO; Lynn and Marlin Papenhausen of Coleridge; 7 grandchildren, Bryan Olesen, Kelsey Papenhausen, Stephanie Olesen, Michael Olesen, Brady Papenhausen, Neal Heidt and Toby Heidt, 1 great grandchild, 3 step grandchildren and a sister, Shirley Medchill of Grantsburg, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and her husband, Margie and Ervin Swenson and 2 brothers-in-law, Conley Peterson and Don Medchill.
