Velma I. Nordby age 90 of Coleridge, Nebraska died on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge.
Funeral Services will be on Monday, January 19, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge with the Rev. Debra Valentine officiating. Burial will be at Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Coleridge, NE. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-5:00 p.m. at the Church with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday at church one hour prior to services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge.
Pallbearers will be Velma's grandchildren; honorary pallbearers are her great grandchildren.
Velma Irene Nordby was born on June 13, 1924 in Hartington, Nebraska to Henry and Gesena (Post) Heitman. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church and graduated from Coleridge High School in 1942. Velma married Darrell E. Nordby on June 24, 1947 in Coleridge. Seven children were born to this union. Velma and Darrell lived on the farm and then moved into Coleridge in 1984. Darrell died on April 28, 1990. She worked as a clerk for the Farmers Union Grocery Store and then worked for Coleridge Senior Center.
She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Women of the ELCA, Coleridge American Legion Auxiliary, Busy Homemakers Club for 60 years, and the Rebekah Lodge #187 in Hartington. She had taught Sunday school and liked all kinds of sports and enjoyed going to her grandchildren's activities.
Velma is survived by her six children and spouses, Neal and Sue Nordby of Papillion, NE, Glen and Darlene Nordby of Madison, NE, Steve and Marti Nordby of Coleridge, Brian and Kathy Nordby of Stanton, NE, Linda Beam of Coleridge and Lowell Brown of O'Neill, NE, Janis and William Elliott of Bellevue, NE; 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; brother Don and wife Betty Heitman of Coleridge; sisters Winnie Janssen of Randolph, NE, Sue Yerger of Coleridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Darrell; son Bruce; sister Alice Kunzman; infant brother Wendell Heitman; step-mother Elsie Heitman; ; five brothers Lyle Heitman, Henry Heitman Jr., Claire Heitman, John Heitman, and Gayle Heitman.
