Carleton L. Nelson age 90 of Coleridge, Nebraska died on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge with the Rev. Debra Valentine officiating. Burial will be at the Hartington City Cemetery in Hartington, NE. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge. Visitation will continue on Thursday at church one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Tyson Fiscus, Nick Zuhlke, Brad Sorenson, Jim McGregor, Norman Hangman, Jack Cooper, Jim Cooper, Todd Nelson, Jack Hintz, and Dave McGregor.
Carleton Luverne was born on June 22, 1924 in Maskell, Nebraska to Melvin Oscar and Rose Marie (Birkley) Nelson. He grew up in the Maskell area and was baptized and confirmed in the Zion Lutheran Church in Maskell. Carleton married Helen Larson on June 9, 1946 in Maskell, NE. He farmed in the Maskell and Hartington areas all his life. Helen died on November 17, 1984 at the age of 60 years. Carleton then married Betty Smith Guy on May 7, 1988 in Ponca, NE. He and Betty lived in Ponca until her death on January 31, 2002. Carleton then moved to Coleridge on June 10, 2002 and lived there ever since.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, former member and council member of First Presbyterian Church in Ponca, former council member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington; former school board member of Rockhill School; former ASCS committee member, and a former board member of Farmers Union Coop in Hartington.
Carleton is survived by his daughter Lynnel and husband Keith Fiscus of Coleridge; two grandchildren Lachelle and husband Nick Zuhlke and their son Ian of Omaha, Tyson Fiscus of Omaha; three step-daughters and husbands Carlene and Tom Stark of Ponca, Laura and Dean Bilstein of Smithville, MO, Clarice Duits of Indianapolis, IN; five step grandchildren Tara and Erik Swanson and son Luke of Omaha, Erin and Nathan Bergh and son Abel of Omaha, Twila and Scott Cowden and son James of Lees Summit, MO, Kari and Jeff Booth and sons Connor and Brennan of Cascade, IA, Bryan and Chassie Schindler and children Xavyer, Aliya and Tytus of Kansas City, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives Helen and Betty, two brothers LeRoy and wife Dorothy Nelson, Raymond Nelson; sister Maurine and husband Norman Hangman; sisters-in-law Vera and husband Bert Cooper, Pearl and husband Harold Strivens.
