Freda M. (Vawter) Munkvold, age 72, of Lesterville, South Dakota, died Friday, June 13, 2014, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota.
A memorial service will be 3:00 PM on Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. A gathering of friends and family will be one hour prior to the service on Monday. There will be a gathering of friends and family at 2:30 PM, on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Munkvold residence in Alta Loma, California.
Freda M. (Vawter) Munkvold was born July 16, 1941, in San Luis Obispo, California to Glenn and Marjorie (Bridges) Vawter. She grew up and attended school in Norwalk, California and graduated from Excelsior High School in 1959 in Norwalk. She won the Inglewood Beauty Pageant becoming Miss Inglewood in 1960. She married Howard Hamilton in 1961 and later married Toby Munkvold in 1964. She moved to Yankton in January of 1979. She worked at Charlie's Pizza House in Yankton and met Larry Kline in 1983. Together they traveled in their motorhome living between California, Montana and South Dakota for 10 years until moving to Lesterville, South Dakota in 2004.
Freda enjoyed crossword puzzles, traveling, cooking and playing her slot machines. She was a dedicated homemaker, painting the windows for Christmas and Halloween, caring for Larry, and recording the daily activities in her home. She had a special talent for remembering important dates and sending cards for every occasion.
Survivors include her husband, Larry Kline of Lesterville; daughter Cindy Munkvold of Alta Loma, California; son, Rich (Danette) Munkvold of Alta Loma, California; eight grandchildren; one great granddaughter; brother, Garry Vawter of Hesperia, California; sister, Glena Swinburn of Hesperia, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Dale Vawter.
