Gerald F. Meyer, age 77 of Hartington, Nebraska passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, August 29, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington with military rites by the Hartington VFW Post #5253. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2-5:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 4:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation continues on Monday one hour prior to services.

Pallbearers will be James Meyer, Taylor Madarassy, Ron Kramer, Melkon Andonian, Bob Meyer, Steve Meyer, Darin Bruening, Jonathan Meyer, and Richard Travers.

Gerald F. Meyer was born on September 7, 1938 in Hartington, Nebraska to Frank A. and Sarah Maria (Lange) Meyer. He grew up in Hartington and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1956. Jerry worked for Clarence Hoesing from 1956-1958 and his first job was to build the bleachers at the Cedar County Fairgrounds. He then worked for John Neu at the Creamery from 1959-1960 picking up cream & eggs. Jerry married Alice Marie Eskens on June 27, 1960 in St. James, Nebraska. Jerry served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1962. He had basic training in Colorado and was stationed at Fort McClellan. When his father died in 1962, Jerry was granted a hardship leave from the Army to help his mother and farm. He was a dairy farmer east of Hartington until 1995. Jerry intended to retire then, but instead began working for Carhart Lumber from 1995-2010. His wife Alice died on August 20, 2004 at the age of 66 years. He then met Sherry Bear in 2009 while square dancing. They belonged to the Town Twirlers Square Dancing group from Laurel. Jerry loved animals, farming, square dancing and woodworking. He has made many woodwork creations for family and friends. He currently was working part-time for the County Department of Roads.

Jerry is survived by his two children, Lisa and husband Ed Madarassy of Ennis, Montana; son Larry and wife Shelli Meyer of Louisville, Colorado; his gal, Sherry Bear of Hartington; three grandsons James Meyer of Watford City, ND, Taylor Madarassy of Ennis, MT, Jonathan Meyer of Louisville, CO; granddaughter Kathryn Meyer of Louisville, CO; three brothers and spouses Edwin Meyer of Hartington, Ken and Mary Meyer of Moorhead, MN, Bill and Pat Meyer of Hartington.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father Frank in 1962; wife Alice in 2004; daughter Cheryl Meyer in 1970; sister-in-law Betty Meyer in 2005, mother Sarah in 2013.
