Larry Luverne Mayer, age 66, of Yankton, South Dakota, died unexpectedly on Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Funeral services are 11:30 AM, on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Ron Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791, US Navy Funeral Honors and Patriot Guard Riders. Visitation is one hour prior to the funeral service at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Michael, Matthew, Darrel, Merle, Aaron, Kevin and Brian Mayer and Lynn Eckmann.
Larry was born on May 18, 1948 in Yankton, South Dakota to Laverne and Beulah (Kjeldseth) Mayer. He grew up in Wakonda, South Dakota where he attended high school. After school, Larry worked on the family farm for a few years and then joined the United States Navy. He was stationed in San Diego, California and served during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Galveston. On April 15, 1972, Larry married Jolene Jensen in Yankton. To this union, three children were born, Jill, Michael and Matthew. He lived in the Yankton area and drove truck for almost 30 years which he thoroughly enjoyed. Larry also loved going to car races and riding motorcycles. He had a great sense of humor, enjoyed the company of his cats and loved his children and grandchildren more than anything else. He will continue to be deeply loved.
Larry is survived by his three children: Jill (Lynn) Eckmann of Norfolk, NE, Michael Mayer (Casey Konichek) of Tea, SD and Matthew (Nicole) Mayer of Tea, SD; three grandchildren: Emma Eckmann, McKinley and Miles Mayer; two brothers: Darrel (Elena) Mayer of Rock Rapids, IA and Merle Mayer of Des Moines, IA; two aunts, Lois "Sally" Hansen and Hazel Nelson, both of Yankton; and four cousins: Gloria (Butch) Becker of Yankton, Marilyn (Tom) Kilgore of Manhattan, KS, Lori (Tom) Dickman of Carmel, IN and Linda (Karl) Pearcy of Leona Valley, CA.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
