Mary Ellen Lowe, age 91, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, August 14, 2015 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Monday, August 17, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend Kwen Sanderson officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Cemetery in rural Volin, South Dakota. Visitation is one hour prior to the funeral at church. Arrangements are under direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Pallbearers are Heath Wilcox, Beth Wieseler, Kelly Wieseler, Benjamin Pinter, Melissa Menke, and Kyle Repp.
Mary Ellen was born on March 26, 1924 to Bernard and Anna (Lien) Garvey of Gayville. After the death of her mother in 1934 she lived with her grandmother, Ella Lien, in Volin. She was baptized and confirmed in the Volin Lutheran Church and graduated from Volin High School in 1941 and from Yankton College in 1945 with a BA in Education. She married Leslie "Bud" Lowe on December 29, 1944 at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Volin. She taught High School at Irene, South Dakota and Orchard, Nebraska while Bud served in the Occupation Army in Japan. On his return they moved to the family farm in the Volin area and they lived there until after his death in 1976. She returned to teaching during the teacher shortage in the 1960's and taught in Mission Hill, Wakonda, Volin and Grove Schools. She spent the last 22 years in the Yankton Public School system with 3 years at Webster School and 19 years at Stewart School retiring in 1988.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mary Circle, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Yankton Retired Teachers. Her interests were travelling, reading, playing cards and visiting with friends. Mary Ellen especially loved spending time and caring for her family.
Survivors include her children: Anne (Jeff) Pinter of Winner, South Dakota; David (Marilyn) Lowe of Bloomington, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Joni Lowe of Volin, South Dakota; Anne's children: Beth (Kelly) Wieseler of Lincoln, Nebraska; Heath (Amanda) Wilcox of Roca, Nebraska; and Benjamin Pinter of Winner; Dave's children: Jonathan (Barbara) Lowe of Singapore, and Melissa (Brandon) Menke of Bloomington; six great grandchildren: Myles and Mason Wieseler, Tara Wilcox, Olivia and Violet Lowe, and Falynn Menke; and many other dear family members and precious friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bud, son Brian, special cousin and travelling partner Evelyn Brewster, as well as other close family members.
