John "Hondo" List, age 60, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, May 16 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral service at church.

Pallbearers are Mike Binder, Tim Garvey, Terry Jensen, Randy List, Brad Parker and Dan VanOsdel.

John was born November 5, 1953 in Yankton, South Dakota to Ernest and Georgiann (Remington) List. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1972 and attended Black Hills State University and Yankton College. John began working for Royal Athletic Company in Yankton. On December 29, 1978, he married Julie Drozda in Schuyler, Nebraska. Shortly thereafter John started Action Lawn Service, later known as H&J Lawn Service. John took pride in his successful business but most of all enjoyed the relationships he built over 30 years of serving the greater Yankton area. John had a tender heart and always tried to see the good in everyone he met. He loved his wife and children and was proud of all their accomplishments. He never missed one of his children's sporting events or activities, even if it meant showing up in his fertilizing boots. He thoroughly enjoyed playing basketball over the noon hour, Monday night football, and watching the Boston Celtics. John also enjoyed Lewis and Clark Lake and going on vacations with his family. He loved the company of his dog, Zoey, who would ride around with him as he worked. He loved the outdoors, took great pride in his work and providing for his family. He lived with a spirit of serving others, whether it be by hanging Christmas lights or providing job opportunities for others.

John is survived by his wife, Julie List of Yankton; three children: Jenny (Darrell) Hallan of Brookings, SD, Jordan (Mariano) Cannone of Cameron, NC and Jeb List of Yankton; four brothers: Terry (JoAnn) List of Yankton, Duane (Vicki) List of Sioux Falls, Kevin (Sheri) List of Yankton and Richard (Dawn) List of Yankton; two sisters, Marilyn Jorgensen of Coleridge, NE and Carol (Chuck) Olson of Grand Island, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Allen Jorgensen.

To the family of the man I loved dearly and always called my friend...who took care of my lawn for many years, who was such a great part of our Trinity family when you were members there, I will remember him for many things...great laugh, twinkling eyes, wonderful friendship, caring, loving, always there for everyone. Hondo...until we meet again, my friend, peace.

I want you all to know how wonderful you are and how much John loved each and every one of you. He spoke highly about all of you. John and I played basketball together for over 35 years. He was one of my first friends when I moved to Yankton in 1978. He was always kind to me and was a good friend. My memories of playing "noon basketball" will always include memoirs of John. I will only have good memories of John but know that I will see him again because Jesus Christ was his Savior. John, I will see you again.

Julie, Jeb, Jordan and Jenny -

My heart is full of sadness at the loss of my "big brother" Hondo. From our house to the golf course or anywhere in between, there was always an added element of fun when Hondo was around. Perhaps there is a big golf course in the sky where he and my dad can play a round. May God hold all of you close to Him and bring you comfort.

Mary (Hendricks) Michaels

Julie, Jenny, Jordan and Jeb:

There are no words that can heal you or ease your pain but seek comfort in God and the love of all your friends and family. Your husband and dad held a very special place in my heart. He took time to help me when I wasn't real sure what I was going to do- a simple gesture, really. I had called to see if Jenny could babysit, but she wasn't home. So, John offered to take Devin to a ballgame so I could got to work. I will never forget that. I trusted him. The twinkle in his eye always made me wonder what he was up to. He was fun loving. Please let me know if there's anything I can do for you, as John did for me. Sometimes even the smallest things are so very helpful.

Kerri Cook Huber

I remember John's huge heart, gentle spirit, his smile always made you feel better and his sense of humor He had an amazing gift of caring, just being around him was comforting and he wanted to help or make you feel better. John left his imprint of love and laughter on so many lives and I feel so blessed to be one of the many hearts he touched. Remember John was a lover of life here and his love will continue to enfold his family and friends from heaven. I have no doubt you will feel his caring spirit when you most need to smile. May God's love and healing light cuddle each hurting heart!

We are heartbroken for you - and sending you prayers and hugs. We are out of town for a graduation and wish we could be there tonight / tomorrow. John loved the Lord Jesus and his family so much. I have no doubt that he is already preparing all of our beautiful lawns at those homes Jesus is making ready for the rest of us. May you find comfort from the Lord and peace knowing he is more alive than ever at this very moment. We love you guys.

To the family of John,

I had the pleasure of working with John when I managed Stealth Automotive. John was always one of the clients we looked forward to working with as he always came in with a huge smile and would make the day that much brighter by his kind words and jokes. You could clearly tell how much he loved and adored his family as he always spoke very highly with so much pride and love. He was one of a kind man and will be greatly missed. My prayers to the family during this difficult time.

Dear Julie, Jenn, Jordan, and Jeb,

I will always cherish the times John and I had together golfing or just goofing off over coffee or lunch. He was an inspiration to our son Adam as a confirmation mentor. John exemplified what a true friend was by taking the time to help anyone in need. He made huge sacrifices for his friends which he had many. Somehow we are focusing on celebrating the life and positive impact he had on us and all his friends. He was my buddy and I will see him in heaven and I know he will have those big rubber boots on when he will say " good to see you again Buddy".

Julie and Family:

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I fondly remember the times with John when I lived in Yankton. Even though it has been many years, John would always call when he traveled this way. When I first began Noon Ball, John and Mike Binder were always supportive and welcomed me (and found someone who would pass the ball, unlike the Stevens brothers...) I know he will be missed by all who knew him.

Julie and family,

I was so sorry to hear about John. I am Dean and LaDawn Remington's oldest. I got the opportunity to see John on more than one occasion when visiting Yankton... he always called me Big Bad Chad... the List family (my family) has always been very important to us, which made this even more difficult... to see part of our family move on. But I find solace, in what Mike Steven's said, we will all see John again in heaven... with all the glory that comes with heaven, & there will be no more pain or sorrow for our losses. John was very special, as you know, & will continue to be in our hearts, as you are in our hearts as you deal with the loss of John.

Chad Remington
