Anita M. Laaker, age 89, of Yankton, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Funeral services are 1:00 PM, on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Discovery Church in Yankton with Reverend Jon Cooke officiating. Burial will be in the Aten Cemetery in Aten, Nebraska. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, on Monday, December 5, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers are David Merkel, Dale Merkel, Alex Merkel and Brandon Marr.
Anita was born June 8, 1927 in Yankton, South Dakota to William and Lucy (Hoesing) Schmidt. She grew up in St. Helena, Nebraska where she attended school. She married George Merkel in 1946. After their marriage, they farmed in the Crofton area and then owned and operated the Sandbar Resort and Bait Shop until 1974. Anita married Floyd Laaker on January 28, 1977. They lived in Oregon for several years. Anita loved the ocean and the time spent there. She also lived in Arlington, Nebraska before returning to the Yankton area to be closer to her family. Anita enjoyed fishing, cooking, canning, gardening and her flowers.
Anita is survived by her five children: Duane (Darlene) Merkel of Phillips, NE, Earl (Bonnie) Merkel of Zionsville, IN, Gary Merkel of Yankton, Darold (Diana) Merkel of Norfolk, NE and Karen Marr of Yankton; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
Anita was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Floyd Laaker; stillborn daughter, Mary; and sister, Valeria Tramp.
