Leona H. Kathol, age 99 of Hartington, Nebraska died on Monday, July 11, 2016 at Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge, Nebraska.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Jim Keiter officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery in Hartington. Visitation will be on Friday, at church, from 6-8:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Jim Gartner, Kevin Kathol, Scott Hausman, Dennis Kruse, Randy Thoene, Jeff Sandlian, Broderick Steffen, and Jacob Winters
Leona Hilda Kathol was born on August 1, 1916 in Fordyce, Nebraska to Henry and Alberta (Baatz) Rupiper. She grew up on a farm in the Fordyce area and attended grade school at District #108. She lived on the farm until her marriage to Hugo Hubert Kathol on September 7, 1937 in Fordyce. Leona and Hugo lived and farmed east of Hartington until moving into Hartington in 1978. Their home was just north of the Rectory. Leona entered the Embers Assisted Living facility in Coleridge in December 2000 and continued to receive nursing home care from that time until her death.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters of America, and member of Perpetual Adoration. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, canning, reading and cleaning. Leona was a member of a neighborhood Rosary Group and Neighborhood card club. She was an excellent seamstress, great cook, and a beloved mother and grandmother.
Leona is survived by seven daughters and their spouses, Geri and Ron Gartner of Omaha, Charleen and Clair Hausman of Omaha, Donna and John Kruse of O'Neill, Arlyce and Jerome Thoene of Fordyce, Carol and Wayne Brown of Alliance, Joan Steffen of Hartington, and Janel and Curt Winters of Sioux Falls, SD; one son Ken and wife Linda Kathol of Sioux City, IA.; 37 grandchildren; 84 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents Henry & Alberta Rupiper; husband Hugo on June 7, 1988 at the age of 73 years; brother Clarence Rupiper; four sisters Rose Heimes, Alfrida Juergens, Viola Becker, Hilaria Kollars; sons-in-law Dick Steffen and Steve Bentson; great grandson Joshua Martin.

Sorry to hear of your loss. My dad Alphonse Rupiper was Leona's first cousin, a son of William and Mary Rupiper.
